Show Me - Tell Me Test Questions
Driving Test candidates will be asked to read a Vehicle Number Plate from a distance of 21.5 meters prior to the test starting.
Driving test candidates will also be asked 2 questions as listed below, concerning the operation and maintenance of their vehicle. The questions will require either an explanation or demonstration.
The first 4 questions will require you to open the bonnet and explain the answers. You do not need to touch any part of engine.
Question 1: Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
Answer: Point at dipstick. Explain - the dipstick should be taken out, wiped clean, re-inserted and removed again, the oil level should be between the max and min markers.
Question 2: Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.
Answer: Point at coolant tank ( largest tank ). Explain - coolant level should be between the max and min markers.
Question 3: Open the bonnet, identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the level.
Answer: Point at the reservoir. Explain - the cap should be removed and you would look into the tank to check the level.
Question 4: Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of brake fluid.
Answer: Point at the reservoir. Explain - fluid level should be between the max and min markers.
Question 5: Tell me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car.
Answer: Explain - Reverse up to a reflective surface ( e.g.. Garage Door ) Push the brake pedal or ask someone to look while you operate the brake pedal.
Question 6: Tell me how you would check the brakes are working before setting of on a journey.
Answer: Explain - As you move off, operate the brake. They should not feel spongy or slack. Also, vehicle must not pull to one side.
Question 7: Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure they are safe to use on the roads.
Answer: Explain - The tyres should have a minimum of 1.6mm tread depth across the breadth of the tyre and around the entire circumference. Also, there should be no cuts or bulges.
Question 8: Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
Answer: Explain - The manufacturers handbook will give the correct tyre pressures and the pressures can be checked by using a petrol station pressure gauge.
Question 9: Show me/Tell me how you would check the powered steering is working before setting off on a journey.
Answer: Explain - That you would start the engine and turn the steering wheel, it should turn easily with minimum effort.
Question 10: Show me how you would check the headlights and tail lights are working.
Answer: Turn the light switch on full, then walk all around the car looking at all lights.
Question 11: Show me/Tell me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.
Answer: Turn on the ignition. Put indicators on for one direction, walk around and check they are working and then put them on to the other direction and walk around and check.
Question 12: Show me how you would check the horn is working.
Answer: Explain - It should only be checked off road and then press the horn briefly.
Question 13: Show me how you would check the parking brake ( handbrake ) for excessive ware.
Answer: Firstly, press in the foot brake, then release the handbrake and re-apply it again. Explain - The handbrake should not go all the way up to the end of its run when applied.
Question 14: Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows correctly, front and rear.
Answer: Your instructor will demonstrate.
Question 15: Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.
Answer: Operate control to wash and wipe windscreen.
Question 16: Show me how you would switch on the fog lights and explain when you should use them.
Answer: Your instructor will demonstrate. Use if visibility is less than 100m.
Question 17: Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system.
Answer: The warning light should illuminate if there is a fault.
Question 18: Show me how you would switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car.
Answer: Your instructor will demonstrate.
Question 19: Tell me how to make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so to provide the best protection in a crash.
Answer: The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the restraint is in line with the eye and as close to the back of the head as comfortable.
